Jaron Davis, who has performed a number of a capella-styled Zelda covers, has returned with his latest work, a cover of “Ballad of the Windfish” from Link’s Awakening. Short but sweet, Mr. Davis dons a Toon Link T-shirt while performing the song, evoking all kinds of different emotions and memories that the game carries with it. Though Link’s Awakening came out 22 years ago, its presence is still felt today.
It was a Zelda game of many firsts. It was the first Zelda game to take place outside of Hyrule, the first Zelda game to not feature Princess Zelda, and the first game in the series which didn’t include the franchise’s trademark villain, Ganon. It set the stage for a game such as Majora’s Mask to be made and was very much character-driven, with a multitude of interesting and engaging NPCs.
Although Mr. Davis’s version of “Ballad of the Windfish” is somewhat short, it does the piece justice, which is one of the most beautiful songs to appear in the Zelda series.
