According to Media Create, Nintendo sold through approximately 86% of their initial shipment of Majora’s Mask 3D in Japan, including 230,000 copies of the game. This compares favorably to Zelda’s last portable outing, A Link Between Worlds, which sold 224,000 units at launch and had a sell-through rate of about 84.5% of its initial shipment.

Pre-orders were also very similar in number. A Link Between Worlds had 75,000 pre-orders while Majora’s Mask 3D had 79,000 reservations.

One other interesting anecdote is that Majora’s Mask 3D helped move hardware sales in Japan. New Nintendo 3DS XL sales were up 193.17% compared to the previous week, while New Nintendo 3DS sales were up 121.07%.

Although it seems that Majora’s Mask 3D and A Link Between Worlds sold about the same in Japan, there is much more of a discrepancy overseas. Could it simply be that Zelda is just more popular in the west?
